Richardson Goes Green in New Ad

FROM CNN.COM:

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Bill Richardson is airing a new ad in Iowa about his proposals to lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduce U.S. dependence on imported oil.
“We’ve relied on foreign oil and paid too much for gas long enough,” Richardson says in the 30-second television spot, which resembles an ad from his 2006 gubernatorial re-election campaign.
The ad opens with Richardson standing outside speaking. His image then becomes part of his campaign’s Web site. A viewer gets the impression of navigating the site as Richardson’s image moves from one energy topic to another as he talks about that issue.
Richardson’s gubernatorial re-election campaign ran an ad on education policy last year that used a similar Web site structure.
In the ad that began airing Tuesday, Richardson says, “On clean energy, a 30-second TV ad isn’t enough time. But my Web site can show you why the Sierra Club called my plan ‘much more aggressive.”
The firm producing his presidential ads, Murphy Putnam Media of Alexandria, Va., also handled his gubernatorial ads.
Richardson unveiled his energy plan earlier this year. Among his proposals is an increase in fuel economy standards for vehicles to 50 miles a gallon by 2020, up from about 25 miles per gallon currently.

Richardson Rising!!! New Iowa poll numbers!!!

From MSNBC.com:

A new Research 2000 poll conducted for KCCI in Iowa shows Edwards still leading with 27%, followed by Clinton at 22% and Obama at 16%.
Also breaking double-digits, Bill Richardson at 11%.
In May, Research 2000 had Clinton in the lead with 28%, followed by Edwards at 26% and Obama at 22%, with Richardson at 7%. So only Edwards and Richardson saw their numbers go up (though Edwards' inch up was statistically insignificant). Of significance, both Clinton and Obama went down.

Bill Richardson's Poll Numbers are Rising -- Is He the Next Top Tier Candidate?

From PRWEB and Yahoo News:

Bill Richardson's Poll Numbers are Rising -- Is He the Next Top Tier Candidate?

Bill Richardson's improvement in the polls and his successful release of two television advertisements on YouTube to be aired on Iowa indicate that Richardson is up and rising.

Bill Richardson released two new television ads on the popular internet video sharing website YouTube.com on Tuesday May 8, 2007. In just a few days, these ads have had over 100,000 views and over 250 comments from others.
About three weeks ago, the Washington Post reported that Bill Richardson would be the first Democratic candidate running television advertisements in Iowa.
Since then, things have improved for governor Richardson. For the first time ever, American Research Group has Richardson polling above the margin of error according to its latest poll taken from April 27-30, 2007 approximately a week after the Washington Post article.
David Terr, who holds a PhD in Math from UC Berkeley and is the lead content developer at PresidentPolls2008.com, says, "Polling better than the margin of error is significant because it affirms that Bill Richardson has true suport." The idea behind all of that is the fact that you could add anybody's name, even a dead person, and still get 2% but getting more than the margin of error would theoretically requires true support.
"The fact that Bill Richardson is still a relatively unknown candidate according to the latest familiarity ratings, Richardson stands the most to gain as each of these candidates get their names and positions out there," says PresidentPolls2008.com.
With the successful launch of his new television ads on YouTube since May 8, things bode well for Richardson in Iowa and the rest of the presidential campaign.

Presidential candidate Richardson talks of need for diplomacy

From Iowa:

Presidential candidate Richardson talks of need for diplomacy

By EMILY CHRISTENSEN, Courier Staff Writer

CEDAR FALLS --- Bad guys like Gov. Bill Richardson. The New Mexico governor has worked with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir to broker a fragile 60-day cease fire agreement in Darfur. He has helped a scared wife rescue her journalist husband from a Sudanese prison thanks to his relationship with the African leader.More recently Richardson was in North Korea, collecting the remains of six soldiers lost during the Korean War, from a country that has been less-than-friendly with the United States in recent history.Richardson, a Democratic presidential hopeful, said it is his commitment to diplomacy that has afforded him the opportunity to arrange such meetings.
It is that same diplomacy Richardson said is needed in Washington to begin moving this country in the right direction. "We should have a foreign policy that we do things not just for our own interest, but because it is right," Richardson told a group of about 150 on the University of Northern Iowa campus Friday. "... We have forgotten that element in our foreign policy. ... I think that buys us goodwill and eventually that translates into something that advances our issues." He was in Cedar Falls as part of a larger program sponsored by the Center for International Peace and Security Studies that focused on conflict and conflict resolution in Africa. "What you do here, mediation and conflict resolution, that's the reason I am running for president," Richardson said. If elected, Richardson said he will make Africa and the Darfur region and other third-world countries that he said have been neglected under the current administration a top priority of his international agenda.
But, Richardson said he isn't interested in starting another war on the behalf of these countries. Instead he wants to use United Nations peace-keeping envoys, economic sanctions and diplomacy to end the wars now raging in many third-world countries. He also would divert funds currently being used in Iraq --- his first order of business would be to remove troops from that area --- to fund additional foreign aid and refocus our military efforts at U.S. ports and in Afghanistan." America also has to protect its own interests. ... The war in Iraq is taking away from the real threats to America," he said.
Richardson, who is in his second term as the New Mexico governor, served as the Secretary of Energy under President Bill Clinton, was a Congressman and an Ambassador to the United Nations. His work has earned him four nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Richardson Leads Race To TV Ads

The Washington Post

Friday, April 20, 2007; Page A06

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson will take to the airwaves in Iowa and New Hampshire next week, making him the first Democratic candidate to run television ads in the states that will lead off the presidential caucus and primary calendar.
"This is an effective way to reinforce the governor's extraordinary record," Richardson spokesman Pahl Shipley said of the commercials. "But the ads are just part of the strategy -- the biggest piece is campaigning town to town, meeting people and earning votes in person."
The 30- and 60-second spots were produced by Murphy Putnam Media and are meant to introduce Richardson to voters in two of the most critical states in the nomination fight. The shorter ad details Richardson's rationale for running and outlines his plans for moving forward in Iraq; the 60-second spot highlights his record as governor.

Radio Iowa: Richardson says Iowans like an underdog

Richardson says Iowans like an underdog

By
O.Kay Henderson

New Mexico Governor and Democratic presidential candidate Bill Richardson says Iowans like an underdog and he plans to aggressively campaign here for support in the Iowa Caucuses.
"I'm going to be coming here not with big rallies in gyms," Richardson says, referring to competitors who've drawn huge crowds in their appearances here this year. "...The last message I want to give Iowans is keep your powder dry. Wait 'til you get a chance to talk to me and see what I'm about...I care deeply about doing well here in Iowa."
Richardson is here today and tomorrow, with several meet-and-greet events scheduled in central Iowa. He contends Iowa politics are "grassroots" oriented and give him an opportunity to do well against bigger name candidates like Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama who are drawing the big crowds. "I like the fact that Iowa likes underdogs," Richardson says. "I like the fact that Iowans like to see candidates face-to-face in house parties."
Richardson served as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and he says that gives him experience in the foreign policy that is unmatched by the other candidates. "I know how we could get out of Iraq. I know how to restore America's international standing," Richardson says. "...I believe that I'm the candidate with the best experience."
Richardson openly concedes he is "not a rock star" -- a line often uttered by former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack when he was running for president. Richardson, who won re-election as governor of New Mexico in November, says he will not "have the resources" -- meaning the money -- that Clinton and Obama will amass, but Richardson says there is an opening for a "grassroots" candidate like him in the 2008 race.
